Golf Tips From Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus stands with the greats in the history of golf. If the game’s all-time foursome were to play an imaginary round, many experts think it would include Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods and Nicklaus–with Nicklaus having honors on the first tee. Nicklaus was a great competitor, and his technical knowledge of the game has always been considered top of the line.

One Basic Swing

Jack Nicklaus does not believe you need to alter your swing depending on the circumstances. “The more things you can do the same on every swing, the better the chance you have of building a repeatable golf swing,” Nicklaus explains in his book, “Golf My Way.” Nicklaus believes you should have the same grip, the same stance, play the ball from the same position and use the same swing plane on all of your shots.

The Backswing

Nicklaus says the key issue with the backswing is to complete it. Many golfers start their backswing and then launch into the downswing before the backswing is finished. “If you do this, you will lose your potential for power and accuracy,” Nicklaus said. Power is gathered during the backswing and reaches its full potential the club is parallel to the ground. To make sure you hit an accurate shot, you must bring the club down the same line you used during your backswing.

The Follow-through

The follow-through needs to be the mirror of the backswing. “I know that if I hit a good shot, I can draw the club back after the follow-through all the way to the point of the backswing and it will be a smooth line,” Nicklaus said. The follow-through keeps your ball on line and is also a great teaching aid for the golfer. “If you bring your club back and the follow-through is not the mirror image of your backswing, you can see where you made your mistake,” Nicklaus said.
