Golf: Mental Game Tips

I am sure you have heard people say that golf is 90 percent mental. If you have played golf before, I think you will find this point hard to argue. I have had countless times, where a simple thought in my head caused my usually rhythmic swing to shank the ball. When I first started playing golf, the mental aspect of the game was my biggest roadblock in making pars. Take a look at these mental game golf tips, so that at least 90 percent of your golf game will be in top shape.

Visualize

Visualization: in every sport I have played, coaches have preached about visualizing a positive outcome. This technique can definitely be applied to golf too. In your head, if you visualize yourself shanking the ball; there is a good chance that it will happen. Its the same thing with a putt. If you approach your putt with a negative attitude, think, Im never going to sink this, and visualize the putt missing, than you will probably miss it. You should be thinking positively. As you are standing above the ball to putt it, imagine the ball going in the hole. Think to yourself, I am totally going to make this! Use this same technique on all of your shots. Visualize yourself taking a nice smooth swing, and imagine the ball going exactly where it is aimed.

Dont Count Your Score

When I first started golfing, I made this mistake all the time. I would start playing, get to hole number five or so, and get excited that I was say, only two over par. Then, on holes 6 through 9, I would think, You have to par this in order to shot a 37! Of course, this put too much pressure on me, and I would end up choking on one of the remaining holes, triple bogeying one of them. Therefore, dont think about your score! Write it down on the scorecard and forget about it. Dont constantly keep count in your head; play the game shot by shot.

Enjoy Yourself

Again, when I first started golfing, I made the mistake of always stressing about my score. If I was not on track to shoot a new all time best score, then I would get mad, and not enjoy my round. Recently, I learned to stop thinking about the numbers, and concentrate on each individual shot. I learned that I shoot my best while playing with someone else, enjoying conversation. I shot some of my all time best rounds just playing casual social golf. Now this may not be an option during competition, but in a competitive environment, just try to enjoy the game. Dont stress about the numbers.

Golfs mental game can be the source of many angry golfers, lost bets, and broken clubs, but it does not have to be. Ninety percent of your golf game will be ninety percent better, if you just take a laid back, positive approach to the game, and enjoy yourself.

How to Hit Good Long Iron Shots

Many high handicap golfers have trouble hitting long iron shots. They have seen Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, etc on TV hitting high towering long iron shots using a three or four iron. But when they try to do the same, they can’t because they can’t create the power and the spin necessary to get the ball up in the air.

If you have a three or four iron in your hand which you are using off the tee or off the fairway, expect the thing to go low. So don’t try and hit it high!

Most golfers over a mid-teen handicap probably should not have a three and four iron in their bag. You should use fairway woods which are much easier clubs to hit, with a lower centre of gravity. High handicap golfers should not be using long irons if they are still struggling with long iron shots.

Having said that, a long iron such as 2 iron is sometimes needed to hit shots long and low when a higher-numbered wood won’t do the job as effectively. Although many golfers tend to avoid 2 irons because they have a 3 or 4 wood that will cover roughly the same distance, there are situations when encountering long holes or second-shot hazards where this will be the club of choice for an experienced player.

To hit long iron shots effectively under such circumstances, the following steps should be considered:

1) 2 iron could cover a distance of between 180 and 200 yards, making it a club primarily used for a second shot on extremely long holes i.e. mostly par 5s. Make sure you practice with it on the driving range to gauge the distance and accuracy within your capability.

2) Set up properly. Unlike when hitting a driver, you should address the ball in the middle of your stance. This will guarantee a solid strike that hits the ball low heading towards the green. If you position the ball just inside your left heel, the ball would be lifted.

3) You want to attack the ball with the club head coming from inside the target line. A shallow arc also allows you to sweep the ball with your long irons as opposed to the steep swing you use with the shorter irons to hit down and through the ball.

4) Hit the 2 iron in the same manner you would any iron by using a descending, even stroke that takes advantage of the iron’s angle to carry the ball for the required distance.

5) Finish the swing with a long follow-through. Do not make the mistake of topping your swing after you make contact. Remember Tiger Wood’s follow through is as long as his backswing. By doing this, his swing is fluid and stays the same every time.

6) Keep the ball low to get out of trouble while covering nearly the same distance as a 3 wood or 4 wood. This is very useful when hitting long iron shots from areas where tree branches could be present between you and the green.

Powerful Golf Swing – Use Your Hips

Achieving a powerful golf swing is easy when you know what generates the power in your golf swing. Do you think it’s just a matter of swing harder? I’ll bet you’ve tried that one. How did it come out? Your golf swing needs a sequence of motion using your hips.

Here’s a little golf tip for more power in your swing.

When you start your downswing you rotate your hips aggressively. The only thing you need to remember is that the faster your hips rotate, the faster your arms need to go to stay in sequence. But…if you are not physically strong enough and flexible enough to achieve this very demanding sequence of motion in your golf swing, you can try as much as you want and it won’t happen.

Your mind may tell your body to rotate your hips faster, but being tight and weak will not allow it to happen. That’s where golf specific fitness comes in. Doing a couple of targeted golf stretches and golf exercises will make it easy to accomplish this powerful move in your golf swing.

Do a rotational stretch for your core, and also a rotational strength exercise like a twisting crunch on a stability ball. The combination of the stretch and resistance exercise will greatly improve your bodies ability to generate maximum power with your hips (and core).

So the gist of it is you need to use your hips to create a powerful swing, but you need to strengthen and stretch that specific area of your body to accomplish it. Does that make sense? If you don’t, do you really think you can do this specific move in your swing for 18 holes? I think not! Your body will break down from the physical demand you are putting on it.

So the take-away from this article is strengthening and stretching your core area to be able to use your hips for a powerful golf swing.

Do you want to find out more about creating more power and consistency in your golf swing.
