Finding the best junior golf instruction is sometimes easier said than done. What sometimes tends to happen is the instructor’s goals and the child’s and parents’ goals conflict. You might just want your kid to learn to play golf just for the love of the game. Your instructor might think you want to create the next Tiger Woods. That’s not all that bad. The reverse situation is even worse. So, with this in mind, how can you find the best junior golf instruction for your child?

The first thing you need to do is to find out if your child really wants golf lessons. They might just say so to please you, especially if you have a “golfing” family. If your child isn’t that interested, lessons are just going to be a source of frustration and ill will between you and your child. Children tend to change their minds and have short attention spans, so if they’re all hot for golf lessons this month, next month might be a different story. That’s okay. Part of the point of junior golf lessons, or any lessons for that matter, needs to be to help your child explore their world, themselves, and their likes and dislikes.

The second thing you need to figure out in order to find the best junior golf instruction is exactly what do you want your child to get out of this. Your answer to this doesn’t have to be carved in stone. You can get your kid junior golf lessons and then realize you have a potential PGA golf pro on your hands, and change your goals and strategy as far as coaching. But in order to find the right type of instruction for your child, you need to know what your goals are.

The answers to these first two questions will help you figure out the next thing you need to know, which is what type of program you want your child to be in. There are all levels of junior golf instruction, everything from private coaching to classes to school teams. Where your child falls into this will be determined by your goals and your child’s desires.

Of course, there are considerations like cost and availability. One good thing to do is to call a few courses near you and see if they have any programs. Also, you can contact your child’s school to see what they have. Using the Internet you can also get in touch with various providers of junior golf instruction in your area.

As far as choosing a program or individual coach, the most important point about junior golf instruction, here, is does your child like the experience? No matter how hard you push, if your child doesn’t enjoy the lessons the results are not going to be there. Worse, they’ll be counter-productive. Golf can be everything from a great career for the gifted few, to a wonderful lifelong sport for all of us. Giving your child the gift of playing golf well will benefit them greatly as they grow and mature. Picking the right junior golf instruction is a big component of this.

So the week is over and you and your group are finally at the first tee. And you are so glad you have a chance to play a round with your friends and just forget about work and all that goes with it.

It’s a beautiful day. Sun is shining bright and warm, the sky is so blue it can’t be real.

What a day!

You are up.

And as you get ready to tee off, you remember that your ball flight is left to right and so you must aim to the left to compensate. You think that maybe this time you won’t slice the ball, but that thought quickly dissipates into the world of ” not true” and reality sets itself firmly back into your mind. For you know that your slice will not disappoint you.

And so you take your backswing and wallop the damn thing out over the lake to the left, is it coming back ? Oh no .. you think, it’s going straight… wait, no here it comes .. back to the right. Just like it always does. Into the far right rough, just where it always goes.

If you could just hit it a little more straight you would surely hit it a lot further.

You once again promise yourself that you will take that golf lesson from the pro next week.

One golf swing instruction should take care of that slice once and for all. That’s what you may think.

So the round went well, you had fun and didn’t play too bad.

The week went by fast and now you are going to do what you promised and take that golf lesson.

And here is what happens.

Your golf instructor tells you the following:

Look you know that the slice occurs because of your downswing. But you have to be aware that all sorts of things have gone wrong before you even begin the backswing, let alone the downswing.

But if you want to get right to the actual movement that creates the spin on the ball that makes it go to the left and then to the right … well it is referred to as an ” over the top move”

This move happens when the clubhead comes from the top of your backswing to outside of your target line into the ball and continues on to the inside of your target line.

Now think about what I just said for a minute.

In most cases the clubface will be open and you will hit a glancing blow outside of the ball to inside of the ball. Kinda like a foul ball in baseball, where the bat only hits some of the baseball below it equator. Or on the bottom of the ball.

Sometimes the clubface is closed, in this case you hit it dead left, no slice, maybe a snap hook. Do not be encouraged by this. It is not a draw gone astray. The problems are exactly the same ” hitting from the top”

Generally you will end up off balance, your weight will be more on the right side and your right shoulder will be higher than your left. This is also called hitting from the top because there normally is little if any weight shift in this move.

Have you ever seen the guy who swings and his left foot swings around on his finish, off the ground and it’s a struggle for him to remain standing? All of his weight is on his right side?

The fact that the club is outside the target line and open will is unavoidable if you have an over the top swing.

The club is off plane and out of it’s proper swing path. Neither is a good thing and tons of potential power is lost through this draining move.

In golf it would be a side swipe and you will bet some nasty spinning from this move. Left to right.

In this golf instruction you will learn that most folks who suffer from the over the top move have similar grips. Wrong grips I might add.

In this golf lesson you will note that this wrong grip is always a weak one. Left hand too far under the grip and the right hand too far on top of the grip. This grip tends to force an over the top move and it tends to prevent a release of the clubhead at impact or better stated it keeps the clubface open at impact.

Check you grip.. is it weak? If yes change it now to at least a neutral grip.

The clubhead must come down to your right side, not out and around the ball. Your right elbow can lead this first move to your right side. So… right elbow to your right side = first move

Use it as a mini drill .. half swing back with your new grip.. right elbow to the right side, hit the inside of the golf ball.

Roll a towel up.. lay it on the out side of the ball.. about 11/2 inches away parallel to the target line. lengthwise… now use the mini drill to hit balls .. do not hit the towel.. got it? Do not hit the towel.

Hit the inside of the golf ball and do not hit the towel and don’t cheat.

This will help you get an inside swing path and prevent the over the top move.

One more time. Using your new grip, half back swing, right elbow to the right side first move, continue to push the clubhead toward the inside of the golf ball and do not hit the towel.

Gradually increase the length and speed of this move and soon you will no longer hit a slice and you will know why. Very important.

Remember that you have to execute your golf swing in one fluid movement. How then can you do this with a rigid stance and a grip that is all too firm? Gripping your club too tightly, for instance, can even result to sliced shots so this should be one thing to look out for. Just keep your grip not too tight, yet not too loose as well. This way, you can direct your ball more accurately.

You should also pay attention to your back swing. As many online golf swing instructions would have, this is the part where you accumulate the needed power for your swing. Thus, this plays an important role as well.

I believe that we all have a certain way that we would like to swing a golf club. If you have been doing it for a while there is no doubt in my mind that you are set in your ways. And there is no doubt that it will be difficult to make you change.

That’s part of the dilemma that golf instruction is faced with. Lot’s of people want a Golf Lesson, but very few want to make the change to get them to the next level.

It would be next to impossible to talk about repeating a golf swing if the swing was already filled with mistakes. You would be in constant correction and perpetual confusion if someone told you to repeat a bad swing over and over.

You would think they were nuts. Wouldn’t you!

But, yet, when you go the range or on the course, that is exactly what most of you are trying to do. You spend tons of energy trying to repeat a bad swing.

Repeatability of performance is not a good idea if the performance is a sorry sight to see in the first place.

Is there anyone out there that would disagree with that?

The idea of repeating a golf swing is to repeat a ” good golf swing” I dare say that it is hard enough repeating anything that requires so much accuracy with so little time involved to do it.

My goodness, just imagine all that goes into trying to hit a ball so small, that is below your knees, with a club that is just a little bigger than the ball. And hitting it straight for several hundred yards, over and over and over.

To me it sound almost impossible.

Technically it is almost impossible. That said, people do it all the time. Kids do it, women do it, older men do it, I have a friend who is a paraplegic in a wheel chair and he does it. I have another friend who lost an arm in an accident and he competes world wide and he does it.

Many of these people do it very very well. They repeat a golf swing that works for them with the tools that the good Lord gave them.

They hit it straight and some of them hit it a massive distance.

So what’s your excuse?

I know I shouldn’t start raising cain about your motivations. Heck, I don’t even know you.

But I do know this. I have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on the range watching people of all ages, of all sizes, shapes, and weights……. thousands, banging away at the ball. Repeating the most obnoxious golf swings you or I have ever seen. And they wonder ” what am I do’n wrong” I hear it all the time.

The answer is: You are repeating a really really bad swing. but the good news is, you are consistent. One of the two things that we strive for.

I have said this before and I will continue to say it. There have been almost no swings that I have seen over the years that could not be fixed. There has almost never been anyone I have worked with that could not shoot in the 80′s if they would just get out of their own way. And do the things they are taught.

So how do you get a repeating ” good golf swing” ?

You read ” How to ” books and then practice what you have read.

Or you go and see your local PGA professional and do what they say.

Or you do both. I have done both hundreds of times.

I spent more money than I thought it was worth going to David Leadbetter’s school in Florida.

Did I learn stuff? Sure I did. Did I practice what I learned. Yes .. Like a crazy man. And yes it worked.

I repeat a pretty good golf swing, do you?
