Biomechanics Of Golf Swing Explained

Biomechanics is the study of movement and physics as it applies to biological systems. In this article we are looking to relate this concept to the Biomechanics of golf swings.

Over the past ten to fifteen years the game of golf has become ever more technical. Millions of pounds have been spent across the world in both the consumer and research industry. For example we now have clubs with different composite shafts, larger sweet spots; balls for greater distance or reduced spin.

In addition to advances of this nature, science has enabled us to interrogate the physical aspects of the game. This can be achieved in a number of ways but in this article we are going to briefly look at the “biomechanics of golf swing” with a view to using this knowledge to improve your golf game.

There are several methods in which the Biomechanics of the golf swing can be interrogated, but one of the main ones is via high speed video camera analysis. An individual stands in front of the motion capture computer wearing a specially designed suit which has strategically placed markers near each joint. The cameras surrounding the subject would then track the individual through the motion of a golf swing and digitally record this information. Computer modeling can then be used to interpret the data.

This means that through technological advances an individuals golf swing can be analyzed to a high degree of precision. The data can then be interrogated by experts to determine where improvements can be made. They would be looking primarily at the following aspects.

The combination of muscles used in the swing and how they work together.

The angles of rotation at the key joints and the effect of these rotations on the rest of the body

The transfer of different forces throughout the swing

The angle / plane of the swing

The control of the club at critical stages of the swing eg. The backswing, the transition, the downswing and at impact with the ball.

The action of a golf swing is a grossly unnatural movement for the human body and understanding the complexities and physics involved can only benefit the individual. Through the professional study of this information it is possible for an individual to learn, develop and therefore improve their game. Understanding the Biomechanics of golf swings can also be utilized for identifying the cause of recurring injuries as well as being used to minimize the risk of both short and long term injury. If you want to learn how you can improve your golf swing, take a look at the resource link at the end of this article.

Golf Ball Retriever: the Tool for Every Golfer

A golf ball retriever is a tool that every golfer should have to eliminate the need to bend and stoop to locate your ball. While a golf ball retriever is actually very simple, it is a tool that can make your golf game much more fun, much easier, cleaner, and simply more enjoyable. When those that are new to golfing hear of such a contraption they tend to snicker and wonder why in the world they would ever need a ball retriever. After just a few games most golfers have a new understanding and appreciation for the golf ball retriever.

A golf ball retriever is just that, it retrieves balls so that the golfer does not have to go into water, mud, or rocks to retrieve a miss-hit. Ball retrievers often come in very handy when you play on a course that has a lot of ponds, lakes, wooded areas, as well as rock gardens. Of course, you never intend to hit your ball into these areas, but every now and again it will happen and a golf ball retriever will make it a lot easier to get your ball without all of the climbing and stooping that is generally associated with locating ones ball. Because of your golf ball retriever youll find that you have to buy golf balls less often because you wont just write them off when they land in hard to reach areas.

There are a few different golf ball retrievers on the market. Two of the most well known are the IGOTCHA golf ball retriever and the Golden Retriever golf ball retriever. There are many other retrievers on the market, these two products are just known for their reliability as well as their durability. Because there are these great products as well as others on the market it can be difficult to ascertain which is right for you. The great thing is that all ball retrievers are relatively affordable, so you can go for one of the well-known products of something else on just about any budget.

The IGOTCHA golf ball retriever is also very popular and can be purchased for right around $30 as well. Like other retrievers the IGOTCHA comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 6-18 feet long allowing you to grab your ball with ease from any area. IGOTCHA can grab your golf ball from water, mud, rocks, and soggy areas of green after a rain so that your pants as well as your shoes can stay clean. IGOTCHA has cleverly come up with four different ball retrievers known as the Executive, the Executive XL, and the Biggest. IGOTCHA is definitely a quality product that many golfers can get a lot of use out of.

The Golden Retriever golf ball retriever will usually cost about $30 and will fit into or attach to golf bags with ease. Even though the Golden Retriever comes in 7, 12, and 18 foot the handle is telescopic so that you dont have to lug around a huge ball retriever from hole to whole during your game. This ball retriever can be fully immersed in water or mud should it happen to land in one of these things. The claw like handles will allow you to simply scoop up the ball with one hand and then drop the ball into the other. Because the handle is telescopic you can reach a ball that is in the middle of the pond.

A golf ball retriever is a tool that every golfer should have. If the golfer in your life doesnt already have one, a retriever makes a great fathers day, birthday, mothers day, or Christmas gift.

What is Meant by a Cupped Wrist in the Golf Swing?

As I’ve said before, golf is mostly a game of opinion and theory, and this topic is no exception. A cupped wrist can be described as poor posture, or a good technique, depending on whose hands it is in. No pun intended. Basically, a cupped wrist is the act of adding a slight curve to your wrist at the point of impact with the ball.

Usually, the wrist would end up pointed toward the target, but with a cupped wrist, it would be pointing towards the sky, probably towards the bird you hit with your last ball. Some people hit extremely well with a cupped wrist, and some people are extremely poor. Many professionals have been known to have cupped wrists, and as you know, if they are known as professionals, they must be doing something right. David Duval was one professional who was known for having a bowed wrist at the top of his swing.

Now to look at the bad side of this, it is very true that sometimes a cupped wrist at impact can mean that you released your hands too early, which can result in flying golf clubs and short distanced balls. Another side effect that I have heard about, is fractured wrists and pulled muscles, so not only is your par in danger, it also threatens your health and your ability to play the game. But how do you prevent it? The best advice I can give you, is simply don’t cup your wrist, if that fails, then there are other methods. One person suggested putting a tee in your glove so that when you try to cup your wrist, you’ll feel a jab and won’t go any farther. That however is a rather extreme method and should only be used as a last resort.

Now we’ve looked at both sides of the issue, and as always, realize it comes down to opinion. No doubt a cupped wrist can’t help your game, but in some cases it can’t always hurt. Though in most cases, we see that it really is a bad thing and should be taken very seriously. It all comes down to being a force of habit mostly, something that can be prevented if you put your mind to it, just like most other things in this great game. But how do you break a habit? The first step is to become aware that you are doing it, if you are already aware, then try to hold your wrist steady during your swing, concentrate on that and everything should be just fine.

The mind is a very powerful influence, and it is more prevalent in golf than in any other sport, it’s just another obstacle to be overcome. Now grab your clubs and go out there to practice, keep your wrists straight and your muscles straight, remember to bring a tee for your glove, and I’ll see you out on the field!

Golf Swing Instructions That Work

There is nothing else in the world like excelling at the sport of golf. Having the ability to shoot well among friends or in heated competition will gain you both respect and admiration among your peers. It is not beyond anyone to play a solid round of golf once a consistent and steady golf swing is established. This article serves to provide golf swing instructions to the reader in the hopes that it will enlighten the reader, as well as improve their golf game.

One’s golf swing can be broken down into three portions: the back-swing, the forward-swing, and the follow-through. Avoiding the common mistakes made during each of these three portions will help to ensure a proper and effective golf swing.

During the back-swing, try not to pick the club up too quickly off the ground. Let the club sweep across the ground smoothly as it rises into the air letting the head of the club draw a circle starting at the ball location and ending with the shaft and club head parallel to the ground and pointing at the target. Keep your posture steady throughout the back-swing taking special care to keep your head down looking at the ball and shifting your weight from your center to your right hip and foot.

As you begin your forward-swing, you will start to move your weight from the right side of your body over to the left. Try to avoid jerking the club down; let the club head act as if it were a pendulum. The club head will gain speed gradually as it descends from its location parallel to the ground approaching its highest speed when it impacts the ball. Once the ball is impacted, a majority of your weight should now be primarily on your left hip and foot.

Your swing’s follow-through is just as important as the other two parts. Make sure not to underestimate the significance of this part of your swing. After impact, try to rotate your torso to face the target and move your head to look down the line of your shot. During this rotation of your torso, you will start to move your right foot lifting the heel, rotating, and finally balancing your stance with your right foot’s toes.

Practicing in front of a mirror can be a good exercise. In order to perform this exercise properly however, you should practice each portion of the swing separately, then as whole. Pay close attention to your posture, the club head sweeping the ground and the shift of your weight from one side of the body to the other.

Keep in mind that correctly practicing your swing will get you well on your way to playing consistently good golf. You may find it helpful to stop by the range a few times a week and play a game of golf in your head. Before each shot, remember your golf swing instructions, and work to break as few of the rules as possible.

After quite a bit of practicing, you will find that your golf swing has become much more consistent. Keeping your swing consistent is the key to playing quality golf. Before you know it, all your friends will be asking you for golf swing instructions!
