Golf: Chipping and Pitching Basics



Having precision in the short game is the key to low scoring in golf. If you can land the ball within a close distance of the hole from inside 120 yards, than consistent pars and birdies are easily attainable. This is where accurate pitching and chipping comes in.

Pitching

Anytime a shot is about 40 to 120 yards from the green, you will most likely be pitching. As is apparent, the best club to use from this range is the pitching wedge. When pitching, set up the same as if you are hitting an iron shot, except when pitching you will have an open stance. This means positioning your feet as if you were aiming slightly to the left of the target (if you are right handed), but keep the clubface facing the target. Line up so that the ball is slightly back in your stance compared to a normal iron shot. In order to vary your distance with pitching, vary the length of your backswing. Bring the club farther back for longer shots, and vice versa for shorter shots. Just like with any normal iron shot, be sure to hit down on the ball; do not attempt to scoop it up into the air.

Chipping

Anytime you chip the ball, it should land within an easily attainable putting distance from the hole. The more accurate your chip shots are, the less accurate your putting needs to be.

With the chip, you will set up almost as if you are pitching, except your feet will be closer together. They should be less than shoulder width apart, but far enough apart that you have proper balance. Again, open your stance so your feet are positioned as if you are aiming to the left of the target. Make sure that the clubface is facing the target. The ball will again be relatively back in your stance. The key to chipping is hitting down on the ball with a solid stroke. Dont decelerate on the downswing. When chipping, the backswing will be much shorter than the pitch shot, but again, in order to vary the distance the ball is hit, vary the length of your backswing.

Practice pitching, and chipping at a driving range and on a practice green. Obviously, you will be aiming to get the ball within a very close distance to the hole. In order to become more accurate with pitching and chipping, you must get a feel for the distance you are hitting. This can only be accomplished with a lot of practice.

Mastering the Golf Swing Sequence



Do you play golf? Do you know how to swing your golf club right? If not, you probably need to know the golf swing sequence. That’s right, swinging the golf club has a sequence!

The golf swing is known to be one of the most complex and explosive moment in sports. Your body must be prepared to do this very athletic and powerful action successfully while without preventing an injury from happening. You have to be flexible and muscular. You must also be well-balanced. Having all these characteristics, you should be ready to learn the golf swing’s sequence.

There are five sequences that create a golf swing as defined by The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Alabama. These are the set-up, backswing, transition, downswing, and follow through. In the set-up, you must do a correct posture. You must also have a good grip on the golf club. In the backswing, of course, you do the backswing. Make sure that you do the backswing slowly. Trying to do it as quickly as possible would only produce an undesired result. Doing it slowly builds up the power that you’ll be using to hit the golf ball. The transition is the part of the golf swing where you’ve finished doing the backswing and is about to start the downswing. When you do the downswing, the power now readies to be released. Your body and shoulders now begins to turn. The body’s turn also increases the power. The follow-through starts after hitting the golf ball. The arms automatically go up because of the momentum.

Learn to incorporate the golf swing sequence with your swing. It’s the only way to make a perfect swing and to lower your scores. Practice each of the sequences and perfect each one. The most important thing is to have a fluid and consistent swing, this will guarantee that you hit the ball straight and true each time.

PurePoint Golf Instruction Golf Backswing and Bending the Knee Advice



Im going to give you some great golf backswing advice thats going to help you a lot. There are two mistakes that you can make in the backswing. And then Im going to tell you the correct way to do it.

The first mistake is, if your shoulder doesnt move and doesnt turn backwards, then your arms will run into it and the shoulder will tilt up in the air. And if you do that, the golf swing will look too vertical, and youll hit the ground and youll hit a lot of shots off to the right.

On the other hand, some of you think so much of turning that you turn your right shoulder and your hips together, and the golf club gets way around inside.

So, for those of you that do this, youll wind up hitting a lot of tops because the club wont swing back down.

So, let me give you some golf backswing advice. This is the correct way. After youve addressed the golf ball, the right shoulder starts turning backwards. And that way, this enables the golf club to swing up on the correct plane.

So, if you can move your shoulder out of the way and dont turn your bottom much, the golf club will move up on plane as you turn away from the golf ball.

Now, Im going to tell you the role that the knees play during the entire golf swing. The correct posture in golf, in order to improve your golf swing, is that you bend at your hips, over the bones that are on both sides of your hips.

We dont sit in this sport. We have our knees slightly flexed, and then we bend from the hips.

In the golf swing, the knees never ever get straight in the backswing. They stay flexed the entire way.

The game of golf starts and ends right here. Good players play the sport from inside the right knee as they turn. It doesnt go out and it doesnt go straight. But it stays where it was at the beginning of the backswing, so as we start back the knees dont move.

Now, the downswing: As the arms start to unwind the knees dont move at all. The centrifugal force, the speed of the golf club swings into the ground.

As the club passes you and your left hip starts to move out of the way, then, and only then, does the right knee start to get straighter in the downswing after impact.

And the entire time, make sure that you dont lock your left knee in the downswing. Keep it slightly flexed as you swing through. You dont have to come all the way up and straighten it up.

I think that that might help you improve your golf swing. Think about this tip a couple of times and make sure that this is what you’re thinking of when you swing the golf club, in relation to your knees.

Golf Swing Hip Rotation – The Secret to Explosive Power



The power hidden inside your existing golf swing can easily be tapped with a proper hip rotation. If you suffer from a slicing golf ball, shorter drives than you would like, or a higher score than you would like, focusing your swing around your hip rotation can quickly give you an extreme distance and accuracy boost.

Contrary to what most people believe, about 85% of the power in your swing comes from your hips, just as it does in a baseball swing, a boxing punch, a tennis swing, and just about any other contact sport. Turning your hips faster during your swing will dramatically increase the length of your drives and iron shots.

One of the most prominent examples of a professional golfer taking huge advantage of a fast, powerful hip rotation is Tiger Woods. His hips move so fast throughout his swing they are almost a blur.

To take advantage of this, you should ensure your hips follow the correct motions as to extend the plane of your swing in such a way that the swing is one big, fluid motion. During the down swing, your shoulders should be rotating about 90 degrees from your starting position and your hips should rotate about 45 degrees. If you exceed the 45 degrees or 90 degrees, your body will naturally open the clubface, leading to an extreme slice (since all of the power is now focused on slicing the ball instead of hitting it further).

As you swing through the downswing, you should be focusing on gradually increasing the speed of your hip rotation until it is its fastest at the bottom of the swing, and continues throughout the follow-through.

Some of the standard swing pitfalls should be avoided, however, as they could lead to topped balls and thin shots instead of launched drives, so be sure you do not fall into one of those. Pay particular attention to them when you are placing the untapped power of a strong hip rotation behind your swing.

Here ‘s Golf Instruction That You Have Never Heard Before, Something That Works If You Let It!



Back in the day, good golfers used to roll their hands open on the backswing. This move opened the club face at the top of the swing. An interesting position to be in since you want the club square at impact.

This open position created a need to make a severe correction on the way to the ball in order to square the club up at impact. This correction required tremendous timing and great hand eye coordination. Only the best players could do it on a consistent basis.

This is absolutely true.

So, here is a question. Why in the world would someone of average or less talent attempt this exact move over and over and over?

I must admit that I have no clue as to what the answer is.

But, what I do know is, that I see this move all the time. Swinging their arms and rotating the club face open and then having no idea how to get the thing back to square.

So how do you know if you are one of those?

If you take your normal move away, watch the position of your left elbow. If it tends to move up and your right elbow tends to move down, you have rotated your arms and opened up the club face.

If you know what to look for, tell someone else to see if you are opening the club face. You will have to explain exactly what you mean. But that might be more reliable than for you to look at your own elbows.

What happens next is when the mess starts.

Almost everyone will cast the club or “get long” on the downswing. This is in an attempt to get that club face square. Unfortunately, it is a very serious power drain, it releases the club way early, it causes you to ” drag” the club to impact and you will likely hit the ground way before you hit the ball if you don’t compensate by having a serious and powerful weight shift.

WHEW!

That is the bad news. Trying to make this move is almost impossible. I know this very well since I used to do it too. I was cured when I took at lesson at David Leadbetters golf school here in Florida.

I will give you the benefit of this golf instruction. A golf lesson that to this day is one of the very best bit of golf instruction that I have ever participated in.

The cure for this problem is simple, if you could do it. It is ” just don’t roll your arms” but that doesn’t cut it for most. Kind of a let down, I know.

Here is one way to look at it.

Make the club face look at the ball for a very long time on the move away. Keep it looking at the ball. Do not roll it away. And about half way back the club face should be almost looking at the ground.

If you put pressure on the grip with your right index finger, to hold the club face square while moving it into your back swing, you will be able to keep the club”looking at the ball a long time”

Try it. Grip the club and put down pressure on the grip with your index finger of your right hand. All the while thinking of keeping the club face looking at the ball.

Or…..

Take another ball and put it behind the club on the ground. Now push it straight back as you move away.

Or.. take a small block of wood and place it behind your club on the ground and push it back straight as you move away.

Either way will show you how to move the club back without rolling your arms and getting the club open.

Now if you are able to do this, you will find that your hits will be crisp and there will be a divot. After the ball not before.

This move should also shorten your back swing some. Believe me that is a very good idea.

Check points are the left wrist at the top of the swing should be flat. Never cupped.

Half way into your back swing the club face should still be looking at the ground..more not less.

The right wrist should be in the trayed position at the top of your back swing. More not less.

If you are able to get this done, you will be shocked and amazed at the difference in your ball striking. Remember to give it a chance. These moves don’t come over night. And they are not easy. Be willing to take the time and effort to become as good as you can at this game. You can do it. We all can.

So have at it……….. get her done!!
