A Golf Lesson On Weight Transfer

We all want to lower our golf handicap. That’s why we practice so hard and read so much about the game. It’s the “Holy Grail” of golf. Among the keys to achieving a lower golf handicap is consistency. You must be consistent to lower your scores and cut strokes from your handicap. If you want to achieve consistency, transferring your weight correctly is a must.

But that’s easier said then done. As an instructor, I see many golfers struggle to achieve proper weight transfer. Even golfers who I know are good athletes sometimes have trouble with this. Poor weight transfer is one of the most common swing faults in my golf lessons. It’s especially prevalent with golfers who play infrequently. They have what’s called a “reverse pivot”- one of the deadliest swing flaws in the game.

Transfer Your Weight

Normally, when swinging a club, you transfer your weight onto your back foot during your takeaway, then onto your front foot during the follow-through. Watch Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, or any of the pros on television and you’ll see how well they achieve correct weight transfer. For them, it’s second nature. They make the transition smoothly and efficiently. That’s why they’re so consistent when hitting a golf ball. None of them exhibit anything even close to a reverse pivot.

With a reverse pivot, you do the opposite of what you should do. Instead of transferring your weight to your back foot and then to your front foot, you transfer it to your front foot during your takeaway and then back to your back foot during the follow through. This move constricts your body turn, short-circuiting power and inhibiting consistency. Golfer’s who exhibit a reverse pivot don’t get much on their drives or iron shots.

Causes of a Reverse Pivot

Causes for a reverse pivot are many. An obsession with keeping your head down, an attempt at holding your left arm (right for left-handers) rigidly straight, and/or allowing your head to turn to the right as you swing the club back-all cause a reverse pivot. So if you find yourself doing these things, you may be employing a reverse pivot in your swing without knowing it.

Since the reverse pivot wreaks havoc with your swing, it’s hard to describe any tell tale signs that you have the fault. The reverse pivot restricts your turn so much that your arms and hands have to take over the job of your shoulders while hitting the ball. That curbs your power. But two sure-fire signs that you are committing a reverse pivot are loss of power and accuracy.

Eliminating the Reverse Pivot

One way to eliminate the reverse pivot is to practice this drill: Adopt your address position, and then place the club across the back of your shoulders. Now turn as if you were going to hit the ball. As you turn back, the club encourages your head and spine to rotate. Sense your balance as you do this. A good tip to get the hang of this is to look out of the corner of your left eye (right for left-handers) at the top of your swing. Practice this drill as often as you can… and then keep doing it.

Another drill-one that seems to get better results in my golf lessons-is to begin with a sort iron and assume your setup position. From your setup, lift your forward foot and position it next to your back foot. As you swing, take the club away from the ball, lift your forward foot, and allow it to return to the original position in your setup as soon as your club reaches about waist high in your backswing.

This drills trains your body to shift your weight to your back foot at the beginning of the backswing and allows your body to shift its weight toward the front foot at the end of the backswing, and then on through the downswing. It also promotes a much healthier spin angle, both atop your swing and into the finish.

Proper weight transfer is essential to developing a swing that delivers power and accuracy consistently. Achieving consistency-whether by taking golf instruction sessions or through working things out on your own-is the only way to lower your golf handicap. If you’re serious about becoming a scratch golfer, make consistency your ultimate goal.

The Golf Swing Jacket May Help Your Swing

A golf swing jacket is a piece of equipment which can help you to correct your swing. It is better than trying to change your swing by yourself as it physically restrains your arms, meaning that you have to use other muscles.

This is much easier than trying to change your swing by your self as you tend to go back to your old ways – it can be very hard to break the habit. Not only does the swing jacket stop your arms from moving too much but they have a special design which guides your arms into the correct positions required when swinging.

By using the jacket you can help to improve your muscle memory unconsciously and so when you practice you do not have to try top remember the correct swing. A lot of people find that it can improve their game a lot and it is easier than other techniques that they have tried to learn.

It does look rather awkward though and may not be something that you would want to wear outside of the home. When you get back out on the golf course you should find that your game has improved considerably.

An alternative way to change your muscle memory is to exercise the muscles that you use when you swing at the ball.

By improving the flexibility and strength of these golf specific muscles, you should find that your swing will improve without the need of a golf swing jacket or other expensive golf equipment.

Do you want to discover the secret to creating more power and consistency in your golf swing… AND eliminating ALL your swing faults?

The Golf Grip – How Hard Should you Hold It?

Keeping a solid and firm golf grip while swinging is critical to your golfing consistency and success. Now there are many different “ideas” on how hard you should grip the golf club, e.g. hold the grip as though youre holding a baby bird OR hold the grip as tight as you would a loaf of bread etc., etc. But the bottom line really is not so much how hard you hold the grip but its how hard you dont hold it.

What do I mean?

Well in an ideal world you should hold the golf grip just hard enough so it doesnt slip or move around when you swing. Now how hard that is for you or me varies greatly on the strength of our hands.

If you have very strong hands then you may not need to hold the golf grip as hard as, say, I would. So the defining line on how hard to golf grip a club is by how much it moves and heres a great way to determine your golf grip movement.

Line up 6 balls in a row on tees and then start at the first one and hit it and dont alter your golf grip and then hit the next ball and the next one. And if you come to a point when you cant hit the ball because your golf grip is nothing like it should be then you know that your golf grip has slipped when youve swung. If you cant hit the second shot because of your grip movement then youve got a grip slippage problem that needs fixing fast.

The main key to your grip slipping will most probably be due to your top hand moving. So heres a simple exercise you can do to help fix this.

Grip the golf club as normal. But just before you swing place a golf tee between the pad of your left hand and the golf grip. Now this golf tee should be securely in place by the pressure that you’re placing on the golf grip with your left hand. Once it is you simply need to swing as normal and keep the tee in place.

Naturally this can only happen if you don’t move your top hand grip. And this will happen naturally just by you being aware of the golf tee and trying to keep it in place. Then after some practice with this exercise go back and do the 6 ball exercise and see if you’ve improved your grip security.

I’m sure you will find you have improved it. So try this and see for yourself.

Golf Swing Tips – Fix Your Grip, Lower Your Score

A proper golf swing starts with the correct grip. While gripping
the club properly seems simple enough, an improper grip is quite
common.

And without the proper grip, even though the rest of your
golf swing may be solid, your shots and consistency will suffer.
So how do you make sure your grip is correct?

Everything starts with the grip, and the grip starts with proper
placement of the left hand on the club. The left hand is the
first point of contact between you the golfer and the club.

The
correct grip with the left hand is what allows the proper hinge
of the wrists that positions the club to swing freely through
the ball.

A big problem for a lot of golfers is that the grip can look
right from the outside, when the hand is on the club. But you need
to take a closer look and see what’s underneath.

Many golfers have the shaft of the club running high on the palm of
the left hand. This inhibits your wrist hinge, which can cause you
both distance on your golf shots, as well as accuracy.

The shaft of the club should run diagonally across your hand from
the base of your little finger to the middle of your index finger.

While this is still primarily a palm grip, you’ll feel the grip
a lot more in your fingers than when the club was running higher
up on your palm.

This adjustment in your golf grip will allow you more flexibility
in your left wrist, allowing for a greater range of motion in your
hinge that is necessary to generate clubhead speed through the impact
of the ball.

If you’re looking to improve your golf swing, start by taking a look
at how your gripping the club with your left hand. A proper golf swing
starts with your grip.
