Golf Handicap: 3 Crucial Ways to Lower It!

The golf handicap is the tool by which golfers everywhere use to instantly compare and judge each other on their skill level of the sport. The question of who is the better golfer can be answered simply by comparing this magical number no matter what your background or where you come from.

The golf handicap is also the only fair system to allow golfers of different abilities to compete against each other in competition and maintain, hopefully, a close and exciting game.

The challenge, however, always remains the same. That is to lower your golf handicap and if possible to get that figure into single digits. This seems to be the ultimate goal for many amateur golfers and if you don’t believe me try asking any golfer with a handicap of 10 or above!

So how do we go about lowering it? How do we topple an extra couple of shots off of our golf handicap? The answers to those questions aren’t always popular as everyone is looking for a short cut, but rest assured that by applying these methods then you can notice a difference in your performance very quickly indeed!

Improve your fitness levels

This has got to be my first tip for any golfer looking to reduce their golf handicap. Have you ever noticed in your round of golf, especially in the hot summer months, that by the time you are playing the 14th and 15th holes it takes a lot more effort to maintain concentration and focus on your shots? This is the part of the round that could make or break that decent score you have been putting together!!

A game of golf played over 18 holes can have you walking approximately 4 miles. Add to that the fact that you are carrying a bag full of irons, woods, balls, snacks, drinks, waterproofs etc. then you are certainly carrying a few extra pounds on that walk!

The more tired you get the harder it is to hit your drives straight and long. Your approach shots go a bit wayward of the green and you 3 putt instead of 2 putting. All these shots add up!

By simply improving your fitness levels you may last those extra couple of holes without feeling the effects of fatigue setting in.

So if you don’t already, then why not go for a few walks during the week. If you already do this, then why not do a little more and have a jog round the park. Basically, whatever you are doing now, just do that little extra and feel the difference on those last few holes on the course!

Practise Practise Practise

I have spoken to many golfers who are desperate to lower their golf handicap. They will buy the latest golf clubs and golf equipment and will even play in each weekly competition at their golf club but are annoyed that they don’t improve their scores!

When I ask them how long they have spent on the practise ground, or how many balls they have hit at the driving range the answer is usually either not long or not very many.

I have spoken to the professionals of a few golf clubs recently and even asked the best players at my golf club how they managed to get their golf handicaps down to at least single figures and every time the answer is the same. Practise!

To make my point ask yourself these questions. Do you think your game would improve if you hit 50 practise balls a week? Probably not too much. What about 250 balls? What about if you hit 500 practise shots a week, and you did this for a month solid!

In short, you would learn so much about your golf game that you couldn’t not improve your scores. You don’t necessarily have to hit 500 balls a week, but hopefully this focuses your mind that you shouldn’t just rely on the newest golf club or new golf ball and that, yes, some work will have to be done to improve your scores…..but it sure will be worth it!

Golf Instruction – Golf Lessons

I think the two tips above are great ways to lower your golf handicap by a few shots in a very quick fashion. I also think, however, that sometimes you will need a bit of a steer in the right direction to get even more out of your game.

Just like when you were at school you would go to your teacher for some help when you got stuck, in golf there will come a time when you need a few pointers.

My tip here is to go and ask for help from someone who knows what they are doing. In the golfer’s case, have a chat with your club professional.

Why go on for weeks battling with a problem you have that no mater how much you practise you just can’t seem to overcome.

Don’t be stubborn and don’t drive yourself crazy. The club professional will happily and quickly analyse your problem and set you on the right path!

So if you’re struggling, don’t be shy about asking for lessons. Rest assured that all the great players have lessons. Even Mr Tiger Woods has someone helping him with his game today. He is not stubborn or too proud to ask for help and he is the best player in the world. So go ahead and get some guidance from someone in the know to help you out!

So there we have an outline for three crucial ways to lower your golf handicap. Combining these three basic yet often neglected pieces of advice I strongly believe that any golfer can improve their game and at the same time enjoy the sport that little bit more!

Give them a go and let me know how you get on!

How To Improve Golf Swing With Visualization

If you are looking for answers to how to improve golf swing, you are definitely not alone. There are plenty of golfers out there who are having this exact problem and are looking for a solution.

The key in better golf is in the focus itself, just being focused in the game and not getting distracted. Like any other game that requires high level of mental focus and concentration, like chess or any other competitive sport. Example for golf – when you are in the field and your mobile phone rings, your boss or your employee gives you some info. If info is critical, or urgent or even a simple message that makes you think about work instead of the game, then you just lose it, your game just goes down the tube.

Focus in golf just means being able to concentrate on the game without being affected by outside “noise”. The bigger battle, however, is often the “inside noise” that sometimes gets created unconsciously.

For example :-

You are now in front of a pond (water hazard). To clear the pond, you have to hit 200m. If you are a weak player, you don’t want to take chance, because you are not too confident of hitting the ball over 200m. So you take 2 x 100m shots to go around the water hazard. But if you are not weak, but also not too consistent in your long shots, then thats where the devil takes over your mind.

You are “greedy” and want to clear the hazard in 1 shot instead of 2 (the lesser number of shots the better), so you can beat your competitor. If you cant focus on the job at hand, then when you start to address the ball, you get intimidated by the stretch of water in front of you and start to get less confident in your attempt, and doubts gets into your mind. This “loss of focus” affects the muscle co-ordination and consequently, the swing, and the ball lands in the water. Then the player cursed and the snapshot of the failed attempt is sent to his mind and then carried forward to the next hole, and the next game, and so on

So how did being focus and how visualization help Joyce?

Another aspect to better golf is visualization – you need to form the “shape” of your shot before you hit it.

Example :-

Scenario

Your ball is on a spot where the hole is 200m in front but towards your left side.

If you just hit straight 200m, your ball will end up missing the hole. So you break your play into 2 shots – hit the 1st shot 100m straight in front of you, then face left and hit the ball towards the hole. Better players like a professional golfer can hit golf ball in fairway a curve shot so that the ball can skew towards the left and land closer to the hole. To do this, he must first create an image in his mind on where he wants the ball to land. This visualization is crucial, else the ball may end up in a bad position, like inside a wooded area among trees or in tall grasses. Then he goes through the swing in his mind – and imagine he hits the ball, it goes through the air, takes a slight turn to the left, falls on the fairway, bounced three times, rolls forward and stop 50m away from the hole. Now, what actually happens is usually quite different from what is visualized in the minds of the average golfer. The average golfer, often do not visualize the entire process. Instead their minds are cluttered with their daily “noises”, unable to focus and concentrate.

If you are not seeing improvement in your golf game, you need to step back and think about what happen when you are in the fields. Observe what your mind is thinking and take note. Then try the visualization process and if possible, get the Attraction Accelerator to help your mind stay focus.

Driver Golf Swing – Make Your Driver Golf Swing Go Further

Ask anyone who plays golf what one of the trickiest parts of the game is and they will tell you that it is getting the driver golf swing right. Doing so can signal the start of a very good hole but doing it wrong can add even more shots onto your par which is something that you do not want to happen.

So what is the secret to getting that all important driver golf swing right every time? The answer is by paying attention to what you are doing and learning from your mistakes. Too many people falsely believe that they should approach the ball quickly and take aim and hit the ball powering down as hard as they can – however this will not equate to a good driver golf swing. Hitting the ball as hard as you can and with no thought or preparation usually leads to shots that either miss, hit the ball off centre or end up with you just making divots in the ground.

Instead you should take your time and approach the ball with care and concentration, making sure that you are stood comfortably and firmly with your feet apart and knees slightly bent. Then perform the backswing keeping your eyes on the ball and with your head aligned with your spine. Draw back the club and swing rotating your hips to ensure that you are really swinging into the ball, then strike the ball and follow the shot through so that the club makes a clean arc in the air.

Doing this will improve your driver golf swing and ensure that you are hitting the ball cleanly without over balancing or attempting to hit the ball too hard. When playing golf it is always best to try to relax and focus on the ball, blocking out distractions around you.
