Golf Swing Tip – Hogan’s Pane of Glass

Hogan’s Pane of Glass explained in detail.

The best mental image ever devised to keep your golf swing on plane is “Ben Hogan’s Pane of Glass”. Hogan spends a whole chapter in his book “Five Lessons” on the swing plane using this “pane of glass” imagery. This tells you how important he felt swinging the club on plane is to becoming a great golfer.

Look at the drawing above and burn it into your psyche! This large pane of glass is angled from the ball all the way through the golfer’s shoulders and beyond. The angle of the pane is dictated by the golfer’s stance. Imagine a hole in the center of this large pane of glass just big enough for the golfer’s head to poke through.

Hogan liked to imagine this pane of glass when he swung because it allowed him to swing the club under this imaginary “pane of glass” in the back swing as well as down into impact and into his finish – without breaking the glass!

The truth is Hogan’s golf swing was always on plane and he is considered by most to be “the best ball striker who ever lived”!

This image alone has helped me tremendously in learning how to attack the ball from the all powerful inside. When you learn how to swing down from the inside, you develop that all important “lag” in your golf swing – and lag is the secret to effortless power in your golf swing!

If you have an “over the top” swing (aka casting), you can see how you would break this pane of glass at the start of your down swing. By being aware of the pane of glass your hands will drop down to your side during the down swing, maintaining your lag (aka the slot – illustrated beautifully by Hogan in the photo on the right).

You will be attacking the inside quadrant of the golf ball – a very powerful image to have for your golf swing.

The “pane of glass” image also helps your backswing. If you swing the club too much to the outside during the initial part of your back swing, you will break the pane of glass. By keeping Hogan’s image in your mind as you start your backswing your arms will stay connected to your body – you are almost forced to swing the club on plane! The wrists will cock by themselves without you giving them any thought.

The other nice thing about using the Hogan “pane of glass” image is it will help with your alignment. As you settle into your stance, imagine Hogan’s pane of glass being perpendicular to your target line. This will help you align your feet, your hips, and your shoulders to the target line – all crucial components for proper alignment.

Hogan’s pane of glass image also keeps you centered and stacked during the golf swing because your head movement will be minimal – remember your head is poking through the hole in the glass.

So work Hogan’s “pane of glass” image into your regular golf routine and learn to become a great striker of the golf ball – just like Ben Hogan!

Hit ‘em Long and Straight!

Do You Have Golf Swing Problems?

If you are experiencing golf swing problems then here are a couple of simple golf swing tips to help you get the perfect golf swing. Most golf swing instructions will provide instruction on the fundamentals that golf needs to cover, however, when you are on the golf course many situations will spring up.

It is often quite challenging for a golfing novice to spot where their swing problems stem from so, if you reach that point where you cannot fathom out what needs tweaking, one thing to examine is your back shoulder. Some players have at tendency to dip their back shoulder towards the ground during the back swing. If you are one of those who do dip your back shoulder, this can cause numerous problems to your golf swing.

Your timing will be thrown way off for a start but when you swing your weight shift will also be improper, you will almost certainly have a poor follow through position and at the point of impact you will suffer from a distortion of your hand position. There is however good news, the solution to the problem is fairly easy.

The next time your are practicing, at the range if you are on grass or at your local golf club’s practice area, place a golf ball under your back foot. You need to ensure that the ball is half buried in the ground but directly beneath your heel. As it is awkward to put pressure on the back foot now, unwanted weight transfer will not take place and your back should problem will happen. Continual practice using this method will enable you to a natural swing without any weight shifting towards the back, thereby fixing a number of swing problems.

Another problem that many golfers experience is Swing Speed. Beginners have a tendency to believe that swing speed is the vital ingredient and one the skill that has to be perfected. While swing speed is important, to constantly go around the course attempting every shot with a very fast swing speed will; almost certainly ruin the round. I would add however, there is no such thing as the perfect swing speed. If you are swinging the club very fast and not really connecting with the ball cleanly, try to slow your swing down. Let the power of the club propel the ball and not your speed & strength. Practice at the range and then when your have perfected an improved swing you can start to increase your tempo but make it gradual.

Grooved Golf Swing – How To Hit Your Golf Ball For Maximum Distance

I was playing golf with my son who hits a good long ball. On a particular tee, we decided to see who could hit the ball further. In making my swing, I did everything I am going to ask you not to do. I tried to hit the ball, to muscle the ball as hard as I could. The result was quite a long drive and a damaged and very painful 12th rib as I had pulled a muscle in that vicinity. If you want to hit a long drive for example, there are several things to consider. I am going to touch on the two main ingredients in this article and mention the rest in future ones.

The two ingredients are the two most important ones. They are

1. Timing and

2. Rhythm. “I know” I hear you say. The point is that timing and rhythm result in excellent balance.

So the most important thing here is BALANCE

Balance is something that is a known factor of the golf swing but something towards which too little attention is directed by.most average golfers.

If you are one of those golfers who attach huge importance to balance, then congratulations. You must be a very good striker of the golf ball. If not, then here is a great opportunity to improve your ball striking and your game. An opportunity to attain greater enjoyment from every round and satisfaction as you see your handicap begin to fall. When you are faced with a long par five and you feel the need to hit a long drive, by all means hit the ball. Sure you have to give it a good hit to get a good start. However you must always make sure that you play within yourself every time you hit your ball.

Make sure your swing is smooth. When you want to hit a long ball, slow you swing down even more than usual. Your swing should be totally unhurried. In actual fact, when you think about making a slow back swing, it will result in you not hurrying it. It will probably be a much better back swing than you usually make if you are a bit quick. It will make your swing more deliberate.

In doing this, you will make the arc of the swing as wide as possible. You will be sure to go to the top of your swing before starting the down swing. The wide arc results in more club head speed which is the deciding factor in the distance achieved.

When your swing goes off, have a look at your back swing. Very often you will find you are not completing it. You are stopping before you get to the top failing to achieve a full shoulder turn. Then you are starting your down swing. The result is a flick at the ball rather than a good hit.

Often a mis-hit.

Good balance is measured very much by observing the finish at the end of the follow through. If the balance is good here, then the rest of the swing before this has been good too with good timing and rhythm.

So play within yourself for your long drives and what ever you do never try to muscle the ball. As mentioned it is club head speed that determines the length of the drive and not the effect of powerful biceps. Muscling the ball may sometimes result in a huge distance, but your consistency will be terrible.

Improve Your Golf Swing and Better Your Golf Score

There are steps you can take to achieve your best golf swing. First, your goal is to find your natural swing, what I mean by that is, don’t put forth any effort when hitting the ball. When your mind and body are in sync your swing will be as simple as closing your eyes.

To find your natural power start by trying to keep your hands “soft” throughout the swing, leave the club at the top of your backswing for as long as you possibly can. “Soft hands” is keeping your muscles supple from your elbows through your fingers, trying this will promote a quicker and snappier release through impact of the clubface and the ball.

By leaving the club at the top, it will feel much more natural. When you get your body set at the top of your back-swing and make sure you keep the club at the top, this will allow you to begin the downswing with your thigh and leg muscles, which are much larger and more powerful than your hands. By driving the downswing with the body instead of with just your hands, you can create some serious lag. It will release when your club head comes in contact with the ball.

These two methods will help you see that effortless swings are the secret to more distance. People generally make the mistake of seeing the target and feeling that they have to use more strength to achieve the distance, which in turn makes you feel like you have to use more muscle, this is a misconception.

Trying too hard can cause a lot of discouragement. Golf could then easily become more of a chore than a game that is played for enjoyment. They may start to wonder at this point, why they even started the game to begin with. Golf is meant to be relaxing, and when it is played right, it is great for you, physically and mentally. If a person could just close their eyes and just swing they could understand why golf is such an enjoyment.

Improve your Back Swing With a Basketball

I ran a golf school in my home town for a number of years. It was a small town of about 4000 people, with larger towns surrounding ours. One of the major roads that led to my town went right past the driving range. There were many people who would drive by and see me with a player, or a group of players, throwing basketballs back and forth. When I went down to the grocery store, the number one question I would get was ‘Kris, how in the world does a basketball make you a better golfer?’ This article is dedicated to answering that very question. For an understanding of the fundamentals of the golf swing, visit my website www.free-golf-lessons.com.

As we all know it is a difficult game that we are passionate about. It is also not easy to improve. Not because of ability, but more often because of time and not knowing what to practice during that time. It is hard to get to the driving range enough to groove a new move. The reason I bring the ball on the range is to demonstrate how each player can improve at home. It helps if you can hit balls for hours and hours. However, if you can put in a few minutes a day of well focused repetitions at home, you would be amazed what that will do to your game.

Now, you can use any type of ball, pillow, or pot to work on your swing. I recommend a basketball because it is big and when properly inflated weighs between 7-9 pounds. This means that it will help develop some of your core golf muscles at the same time as you develop your swing. Since the ball has some weight to it, it will help develop some golf muscle endurance.

The great part of practicing this way is that you really see what a strong backswing position looks and feels like. We are going to focus on the shoulder turn. There are many players out there that don’t turn their shoulders to their full capability, and that causes them to lose power and consistency.

The drill is simple in nature, but often the simplest drills are the most effective.

The Basketball Back Swing Drill

1.Hold your basketball between your hands and get into your golf stance.

2.Start your back swing.

3.Stop and hold your backswing position when your left arm is parallel to the ground.

4.Turn and look at your basketball. If you are in great position your ball should be in front of your chest.

5.Repeat as many times as you can.

If you have made a proper turn you hands will stay in front of your chest. If you see any still photos of the best players in the world, they all get to this position. This position is the key to an effective backswing. If you can keep your hands in front of your chest, you will keep your club on the proper line (swing plane), create more power, and use less energy to hit better shots.

If you follow the steps in the drill, and when you get to step 4 and you find that your ball is not in front of your chest it means you are out of position. This will make it much harder to hit great shots. If your ball swings out around your body and ends up behind you it means you did not turn your shoulders enough during your backswing. This will make your swing very flat and lack power.

Please use this drill on a daily basis, as I know it can only positively benefit your game. If you would like to see this swing tip in picture format please visit www.free-golf-lessons.com/free-golf-tip.html.

Good luck with your practicing and playing. May you ‘Play Your Golf Dreams’ sooner.
