Golf Tips: The Down Swing



The first movement from the top of the swing is a lateral thrust of the hips to the left, eventually followed by an automatic turning of the hips.

This is true. But there is more than that. Here are some great tips to improve your downswing.

The hips must not only move to the left and turn, their movement must be so closely tied to the left arm that it pulls the arm and the club down and whips them through the ball.

Finally you must turn your hips toward the target as they reach the extension of their lateral movement. Are your hips ever in this position when you hit the ball?

What happens, actually, is that the left arm itself is being pulled by the hips. The arm is merely the connecting rod between the hips and the club.

When the hips exert this pulling action, they cause the shoulders and the left arm to revolve so fast around the axis of the upper spine that the hands have little or no time to manipulate or do anything whatever with the club except hang onto it.

If there is one single secret to the golf swings this is it. Moving the hips in this fashion would seem a simple thing to do.

It is easy to say and easy to understand. Yet nearly all of the vast army of golfers fail to do it. Millions have read it and heard it and seen pictures of it, but just as many millions keep right on starting down with their hands, or pulling with their arms, or stopping the hips after they start them, forgetting to move them all the way through.

They fail for two reasons.

The first is that this is a big movement and they are afraid to make it. The second is that, preoccupied with what they think they must make the club head do, they completely forget the fundamental hip action and let it die.

The tight connection between the hips and the club, and the consequent pull the club gets from the hip action, is the single greatest source of power in the golf swing. The big muscles of the upper legs and of the torso are giving the club a flying start before the hands do anything.

To visualize what happens it may be helpful to use a mechanical image. Think of a golfer at the top of his backswing.

Now imagine a rope, running from the point of his left hip up his left side to his shoulder and then out through his left arm to his left hand. This rope is pulled tight at the top of the swing. As the hips start the downswing by moving to the left and turning, they will pull shoulder, arm, and club with them so long as the rope is tight. The rope can be kept tight only if the hips move first and only if they keep moving and then turning, on past the ball.

Otherwise the rope will slacken, the pull will stop, and the club never will gain the speed it should reach at the ball. The rope will slacken if, from the top, the shoulders or the hands move first, or if the hips stop moving before they are all the way through. How do we know when to start the hip movement?

We start it the instant we feel the backward momentum of the club start to pull against our hands at the top. This is a reflex action with most of us, but for those who want the moment pinpointed, there it is. And once you start to move the hips, keep them flying-all the way through until they turn toward the target. This action alone will cure a great number of golfing ills.

This is how it should feel:

For you who have been hitting from the top and from the outside for years (and you are about 95 per cent of all golfers), these actions will feel strange indeed, and our problem is how to describe the feeling you should have when you make them.

Words here become of even greater importance than they are customarily. So, since the same action feels different to different people, we will describe several feelings so that perhaps one of them may be recognized.

What all this comes down to is two things. First, we coil ourselves up on the backswing to gain tension that is going to be released as late as possible on the downswing. Holding that tension is the “staying uncomfortable” feeling, the “storing up” feeling.

That is what gives us distance.

Second, as we move our hips laterally and keep our head back, but do nothing else, there is a complete absence of effort in our arms and hands. Then, if we have kept ourselves from uncoiling, the hands and club come down on the inside. That, plus club-face position, gives us direction.

When we have made this first move from the top correctly, where does it bring us? It brings us to a position generally

Called the hitting area. It is not that, exactly. It is only one position in an infinite number that we pass through in the downswing.

It is, roughly, the point in the downswing that we reach before the arm-shaft angle opens up much.. The move brings us down so that our hands are nearly opposite our right leg, our weight is about equally distributed but moving toward our left leg, the body is beginning to bow out to the left, the right elbow is nestled against the hip bone, and the club is nearing a horizontal position.

Right here the check points appear. We can’t see them in the actual swing, of course, but we can stop the swing now and then and take a look.

If the swing has been made correctly and if the hand-wrist position gained by the backward break has been held, then one knuckle of the left hand should be visible and two of the right, the club face should be at about a 45-degree angle with the ground, the right arm should be firm .against the, right side, and if the hips have gone through as they should, the player should be able to see the outside of his right leg from the hip to the foot.

Except for seeing the outside of the right leg, these check points are exactly the same as they were after the stationary wrist break on the backswing.

If you follow these tips your swing will improve no end.

There must be a definite, conscious feeling that this is happening. It is the single most important movement that a good golfer makes. This is not to be confused with the mistaken advice to start part of the body stay back.

Junior Golf Instruction – Teaching Juniors



Golf can be a great thing for a father and son (or any combination of parent and child) to do together. However, golf isn’t exactly like football or golf where you can bring the child out to the backyard and throw a ball around with them at any age. Children must be a certain age to learn golf, and by that age you’ll need a little more strategy in teaching them the game than just tossing the ball around.

The first important step in teaching the junior in your life golf is to get them excited and maintain that excitement for a period of time. One of the biggest ways you can do this is encouragement and being positive. You should do this towards the child’s game but also towards your own game. Golf can be a very frustrating game, especially when you begin to take it seriously. Many a golf career has been cut short because expectations of lower scores never came to fruition or came more slowly than expected, so make sure that the child is having fun first and improving second. The child won’t have the perseverance to improve if he isn’t enjoying it to begin with.

If the junior has shown enough interest to warrant purchasing a set of clubs, go ahead and do it. Having their very own set of clubs will often keep children interested in the game long enough to develop some skills. Don’t get them a top of the line set. Children grow fast and are temperamental in their hobbies; an expensive set could be gathering dust in the garage in a few weeks. Besides, expensive golf clubs add so little to your game that you may want to consider making an inexpensive purchase on your next set as well.

When it comes to the actual instruction, there are a few basic things to keep in mind. First, emphasize accuracy over distance. 300-yard drives are exciting but you can achieve par without them. You can’t achieve par without accuracy. Juniors will tend to get excited about long, inaccurate drives that leave them just as far from the hole as a much shorter drive would. Make sure the child knows that long is good, but straight is better.

In the same vein, you will also want to emphasize chipping and putting. Experienced golfers know that more strokes are wasted on the green than anywhere else on the course, but this may not be intuitive to children. If it seems like they want to spend all their time at the driving range, try and get them out to a putting green every once in awhile too.

Finally, your child might benefit from taking some lessons. Many golf courses offer lessons specifically designed for children and the instructors may know some tricks for teaching children the mechanics and fundamentals that you wouldn’t think of. It’s also great for getting to know other children of the same age who are interested in golf. Golfing with dad is great, but your child will appreciate golfing with someone who is at a similar stage in their game, too.

What is Meant by a Cupped Wrist in the Golf Swing?



As I’ve said before, golf is mostly a game of opinion and theory, and this topic is no exception. A cupped wrist can be described as poor posture, or a good technique, depending on whose hands it is in. No pun intended. Basically, a cupped wrist is the act of adding a slight curve to your wrist at the point of impact with the ball.

Usually, the wrist would end up pointed toward the target, but with a cupped wrist, it would be pointing towards the sky, probably towards the bird you hit with your last ball. Some people hit extremely well with a cupped wrist, and some people are extremely poor. Many professionals have been known to have cupped wrists, and as you know, if they are known as professionals, they must be doing something right. David Duval was one professional who was known for having a bowed wrist at the top of his swing.

Now to look at the bad side of this, it is very true that sometimes a cupped wrist at impact can mean that you released your hands too early, which can result in flying golf clubs and short distanced balls. Another side effect that I have heard about, is fractured wrists and pulled muscles, so not only is your par in danger, it also threatens your health and your ability to play the game. But how do you prevent it? The best advice I can give you, is simply don’t cup your wrist, if that fails, then there are other methods. One person suggested putting a tee in your glove so that when you try to cup your wrist, you’ll feel a jab and won’t go any farther. That however is a rather extreme method and should only be used as a last resort.

Now we’ve looked at both sides of the issue, and as always, realize it comes down to opinion. No doubt a cupped wrist can’t help your game, but in some cases it can’t always hurt. Though in most cases, we see that it really is a bad thing and should be taken very seriously. It all comes down to being a force of habit mostly, something that can be prevented if you put your mind to it, just like most other things in this great game. But how do you break a habit? The first step is to become aware that you are doing it, if you are already aware, then try to hold your wrist steady during your swing, concentrate on that and everything should be just fine.

The mind is a very powerful influence, and it is more prevalent in golf than in any other sport, it’s just another obstacle to be overcome. Now grab your clubs and go out there to practice, keep your wrists straight and your muscles straight, remember to bring a tee for your glove, and I’ll see you out on the field!

Simple Tips For A Super Golf Swing



Even the guys who play golf for a living and get the best golf instruction in the world still struggle to improve their golf; and they practice each and every day! Many golfers play golf just to hack around and have some fun; more avid players are always looking for ways to improve their golf swing and their overall game. Most golfers don’t know that eighty percent of the world’s golfers have a handicap of 18 or more.

A common mental error golfers make when driving the ball is to hit it as hard as possible. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing. Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence.

Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you’re going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball. Make sure to use the proper technique.

Putts and short chips are ideally played without much movement of the body, but most other golf shots are played using variants of the full golf swing. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you’re holding a soccer ball between your knees.

The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player’s body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists.

Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Pick out a spot on the course, preferably the green of the fairway, and concentrate on hitting the ball to that spot. Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing.

At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.

It’s difficult for a golfer to practice hitting shots longer than short pitch shots unless one pays to play golf or pays to practice at a driving range or indoor golf training facility.

Conditioning your golf muscles will reward you with straighter swings. Hold a medicine ball and turn back and forth; it must be rotational to improve your driving distance. Turn to golf exercise and techniques if you want strength and power.

Most of all don’t waste your money on a golf swing aid you don’t need or will never use. Golf aids are often for sale at your pro shop or local golf shop. Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims.

There are a wide range of golf swing aids on the market today to help the beginning and advanced golfer. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one golf swing aid and go to work on your swing. Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert.

Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing.
