Golf Instruction Online – Causes and Cures For the Hook Shot

Do we need to do everything perfectly to play a decent game of golf? Thankfully no we don’t. Even if we got close to the perfect swing every time things can still go wrong. Ask Tiger Woods or Retief Goosen.

These two great players have arguably two of the best, most classic swings in the world of golf. Do they hit bad shots? Well yes. I’ve seen Tiger have days when he can’t keep it on the fairway and Retief stay on the backfoot and hook it out of sight.

So no need to be perfect but if you have a fault you need to understand why it happens and be able to deal with it quickly. In this Golf Instruction Online article we will deal with the hook.

Here’s three things you can do to cure the problem.

#1. Check your grip. Simple as it sounds a lot of players get very strong with their grip, it gives them a sense of power. Make sure your hands are not turned too far to the right on the grip. If they are then rotate both hands towards the target, just don’t overdo it.

#2. Move the ball more towards your left foot. Or forward in the stance. If you play the ball too far back it will close your shoulder line, moving it forward will stop this.

#3. Make sure your weight transfers and you finish the swing with your weight on the front foot. In my opinion this is the most common reason for the hook shot. If your weight stays back it causes your hands and arms to outrace your body and flip the clubface over, wrapping the clubface around the ball and hooking it out the ball park.

So plenty to go try out there, hope this golf instruction online article helps you to eliminate your hook. Happy golfing.

Golf Swing Warm-Up | Limber Up For An Easy Stroke

Have you ever enjoyed those magic days where your body is in top form? Nothing hurts. You move, you swing and you putt like a well oiled machine. Yes! It’s magic! And then there’s the struggle days when the machinery grinds and groans like a rusty old tractor. Well, the good news is that you can look forward to a lot more of those magic days by adopting a few easy warm-up routines before tee-off. Warming up will be your super lubricant for the perfect game.

Warm-Up before You Tee Off – Your golf swing is directly related to your physical condition and the state of preparedness of your body. Given the sedentary lifestyles of many amateur golfers it is crucial to warm-up and stretch prior to tee off. A little dynamic exercise including forward and backward shoulder rotations, upper body twists and arm circles go a long way in imbuing your stroke with looseness and fluidity. Knee rotations are a great for loosening up the legs and ankles. Take a few minutes before tee-off to enjoy some of these simple exercises. You’ll warm up the proper muscles and joints essential for your golf. What’s more, you’ll enjoy the pleasure of much more ease, relaxation and looseness in your game.

Shoulder Rolls – Stand in a relaxed upright position with your arms by your sides, lift your shoulders as high as you can towards your ears as you inhale. Hold briefly in the up position and then move them down and backwards in a circle. You’ll feel the pull in your deltoids at the bottom of your circle. Repeat 10 times. Reverse and repeat 10 times in the forward direction.

Upper Body Twists – You can use one of your clubs as a prop in this one. Again from a relaxed standing position with knees slightly bent, hold the club with one end in each hand. Raise your arms above and behind your head and bring the club shaft to rest on the fleshy part of your shoulders just below the base of your neck. Maintain your arm position with respect to your chest and keep your gaze fixed in the forward direction. Slowly turn your torso until you feel a nice twist in your trunk muscles. You’ll notice it in your abs, and your oblique muscles. Hold for 1 second, release and rotate back through center and continue onwards to the right-hand side. Hold for another second and reverse. Repeat 10 times or as desired.

Arm Circles – Stand in an upright posture with knees slightly bent and your arms relaxed and initially by your sides. To execute backward circles, swing your right-arm clockwise and your left arm counter-clockwise. Your hands may overlap and at the top of your circle. Let you arms to brush your ears in the swing past your head. Allow your hands to brush the outsides of your legs at the bottom of your swing arc. Release any tension from your arms and hands and simply allow them to be loose and floppy through the exercise. Repeat 20 times in the backwards direction and reverse to the forward direction for an additional 20 repetitions. To really challenge yourself try swing both arms in the same rotational direction and see what happens e.g. try swinging both arms counter-clockwise and watch your brain have a hissy-fit.

Knee Rotations – Stand with feet together and knees slightly bent. Place your hands on your knees and rotate clockwise for 20 reps. Repeat in the counterclockwise direction.

The 5 Minute Difference – 5 minutes is all it takes to run through these simple warm-up exercises. You’ll find they’ll become pure pleasure and you’ll enjoy the building sense of anticipation of a great game as you run through your routine. What’s more, you’ll enjoy much more ease, fluidity and consistency in your movement. Here’s to shooting your lowest scoring, most comfortable rounds ever!

Golf Beginner Free Tips

I decided to begin this series of free online golf tips & instructions with the lessons and methods my grandfather taught. My grandfather was a Golf Professional for nearly 50 years and competed in many tournaments. His career highlights include qualifying for two U.S. Opens and being invited to play in the British Open. Although my grandfather was an accomplished golfer, he felt most rewarded when teaching others how to play and enjoy the game. Although golf instruction has come a long way since my grandfather’s time, these golf lessons still include very important fundamentals to be learned and remembered. Sometimes the best golf lessons come in the simplest form and are made easier to understand and execute. The following instructions have been taken from my grandfather’s notes entitled, “Improve Your Golf”, and I am very happy to share these with anyone wanting to learn how to play golf, or revisit the basic fundamentals of the game.

Improve Your Golf – Setup & Address At Ball For Proper Swing

Your setup at address will be an important part of starting your swing with proper stance, ball position and distance from the ball.

Stance: will vary with clubs as you move from short irons to long irons, but ball is consistently played inside your left heel (right heel if you’re a lefty). What should happen with your stance is you should start with your feet approximately 12″ apart with your 9-iron and gradually widen your stance with each club until you get to about a shoulder-width stance with your driver. Also, you need to have a slightly open stance with your shorter irons (7-p.w.) and a square stance with your long irons and woods (3-6 irons, fairway woods, driver). A slightly open stance is when you pull your left foot and side back just a bit from the ball to slightly turn the front of your body towards your target. A square stance is when you can draw a line across the tips of your feet and the line will lead straight to your target. After you are properly aligned at address with your feet, it is good to turn your left foot slightly pointed out. This will help stabilize your weight when you finish your swing.

Direction: for a shot is an important factor of your address to the ball. Your shoulders should be parallel to the line of flight you are swinging for. It is better to feel slightly aimed left of your target (body open to target) than aimed right of target (body closed to target).

Distance From The Ball: is key for consistency and is measured by standing straight up at address with your left arm hanging straight down in front of your left leg, fingers on left hand are cupped slightly and the butt of the grip of the club is laying across your index and middle fingers only. If it is into your ring finger, you are too close; if it is only up to your index finger, you are too far away from the ball. This pattern will place you at the proper distance from the ball every time and allow for you to make a more consistent swing. This method should be used with every club. Only with chipping and of course putting will you stand closer to the ball.

After checking your distance, remain with your body straight up, grip the club and bend over at the waist only until the club head is placed behind the ball. Then, slightly bend the knees keeping 70% of your weight support towards the front of your feet and toes. Finally, make sure your head is positioned just behind the ball with a slight tilt towards the right. This is where your head should be at impact for maximum control and distance.

Improve Your Golf Score With The One Plane Golf Swing

Every golfer is looking to lower their golf score and improve their golf swing. And let’s face it, a proper golf swing is pretty complicated when you start putting together all the things you need – set up, golf grip, stance, addressing the ball, wrist cock, backswing, hip swivel, downswing, etc.

One great way to improve your golf score is to simplify your golf swing. So how do you do that?

Focusing on the one plane golf swing can go a long way toward simplifying your golf game and improving the consistency of your golf shots. What exactly is a one plan golf swing? A one plane golf swing keeps your club on one plane during the entire golf swing, which can minimize mistakes that you might make.

The one plane golf swing allows you to strike the ball with the club face square, improving the quality of your golf shot. This will help to minimize those bad slices and hooks that get you in so much trouble. A great way to develop a good one plane golf swing is to find a golf instructor that teaches this type of swing.

One good lesson with the right instructor can greatly improve your one plan golf swing, practically lowering your score overnight.

There are also golf swing training aids, such as the golf swing trainer, that are designed to keep your golf swing on one plane. This is an easy way to practice the one plane golf swing at home with minimal expense. You just need to put in the training time.

Finally, another training aid is one I’ve mentioned before, and that is making sure you are properly balanced throughout your swing. You do this by placing a quarter on your front shoe. If you are properly balanced with a one plane golf swing, the quarter should remain on your shoe throughout the swing.

If it falls off, you weren’t properly balanced throughout your golf swing. By being able to swing consistently without the quarter falling off your shoe, you’ll be better balanced for more of your golf shots, resulting in better, more consistent shots.
