Biomechanics Of Golf Swing Explained



Biomechanics is the study of movement and physics as it applies to biological systems. In this article we are looking to relate this concept to the Biomechanics of golf swings.

Over the past ten to fifteen years the game of golf has become ever more technical. Millions of pounds have been spent across the world in both the consumer and research industry. For example we now have clubs with different composite shafts, larger sweet spots; balls for greater distance or reduced spin.

In addition to advances of this nature, science has enabled us to interrogate the physical aspects of the game. This can be achieved in a number of ways but in this article we are going to briefly look at the “biomechanics of golf swing” with a view to using this knowledge to improve your golf game.

There are several methods in which the Biomechanics of the golf swing can be interrogated, but one of the main ones is via high speed video camera analysis. An individual stands in front of the motion capture computer wearing a specially designed suit which has strategically placed markers near each joint. The cameras surrounding the subject would then track the individual through the motion of a golf swing and digitally record this information. Computer modeling can then be used to interpret the data.

This means that through technological advances an individuals golf swing can be analyzed to a high degree of precision. The data can then be interrogated by experts to determine where improvements can be made. They would be looking primarily at the following aspects.

The combination of muscles used in the swing and how they work together.

The angles of rotation at the key joints and the effect of these rotations on the rest of the body

The transfer of different forces throughout the swing

The angle / plane of the swing

The control of the club at critical stages of the swing eg. The backswing, the transition, the downswing and at impact with the ball.

The action of a golf swing is a grossly unnatural movement for the human body and understanding the complexities and physics involved can only benefit the individual. Through the professional study of this information it is possible for an individual to learn, develop and therefore improve their game. Understanding the Biomechanics of golf swings can also be utilized for identifying the cause of recurring injuries as well as being used to minimize the risk of both short and long term injury. Simple Golf Swing, Or How Many Mistakes Can You Make in Your Golf Swing?



Ok let’s get right into it. This is not going to be a long winded article. It may not even make it to the minimum number of words. But what it will do is to point out all the things that I can think of that you either can’t do in your Golf Swing or Don’t do that you think you should do. Things that are either real or not, won’t matter. Stuff that you may have heard that you think makes a difference in you Golf Swing Instruction. Maybe you read Golf Tips in a magazine or in a Swing Fix article. Swing Remedies or a friend gave you a Golf Tip on the range and you thought it made sense. Or worse someone gave you a Golf Tip and you thought it completely wacky, but you were wrong!

Ok let’s see how many we can come up with. I hope to make a good list.

1. I looked up 2. I peaked 3. I can’t get it in the air 4. I keep toppng it 5. I keeping hitting a big slice 6. I hit it dead right 7. I hit it fat 8. I hit it thin 9. I swayed 10. I can’t get a weight shift 11. I had an early release 12. I can’t hit my driver 13. I can’t hit my fairway woods off the ground 14. I don’t get any distance 15. I can never get it close to the pin when chipping 33. I don’t what club to use 34. I can’t hit a long iron 35. I can’t find my ball often enough 36. I am standing too close to the ball after I hit it 37. I can’t hit an uphill lie 38. I can’t hit a downhill lie 39. I can’t hit a ball that is below my feet 40. I can’t hit a ball that is above my feet 41. I don’t know how to hit the trouble shots 42. I don’t understand swing plane 43. I don’t know what clubhead ” path” is all about 44. I forgot the magic move 45. I can’t concentrate 46. I have too many swing thoughts in my head 47. I hate my playing partners 48. I know they made me hit that bad shot, it’s not my fault 49. I always hit a skull shot near the green 50. I don’t understand hitting down on it 51. I know my pro is right but I can’t stand on one leg long enough 52. I know she means well, but my wife doesn’t know crap about the swing 53. I can’t hit a draw 54. I can’t hit a fade 55. I can’t hit it low 56. I hit it too low 57. I hit a worm burner most of the time 58. I hit a shank and now I am afraid to hit it again 59. I hit another shank 60. I can’t make the toe move faster than the heel 61. I never release the club 62 I have chicken wing swing 63. I don’t know what a chicken wing swing is 64. I can’t judge distances very well 65. I have a very short backswing 66. Well I got to 70. I know that there are a least 100. So I could use some help here.

These are all things that I have seen people do and heard them complain about. All of these swing flaws are related in one way or another.

Improve Your Golf Swing Through Consistency – Golf Swing Tip



You can improve your golf swing through consistency. The best golf swing tip anyone can offer is to incorporate consistency into your game. But how is that defined?

You want your swing to be consistent. You want your approach to be consistent as well.

Along with a sense of strong mental focus, you want to be relaxed while playing golf. To some being relaxed and maintaining focus may be opposed to one another. But, in fact, they are not. Relaxation actually promotes focus. It gives energy to it instead of dissipating it.

Bad things eventually happen while playing golf. You cant help it. No matter how much preparation and thought you put into being better at the game of golf, soon you will be faced with an unpleasant situation: a poor shot, the trees, a sand trap, a three-putt .

When this happens, what generally follows? A flare of temper and disappointment if you are anything like me.

And when this happens what follows? Your energy is pulled away from the actual focus of the game you are playing, and you are lost.

Most golfers take all of this as part of the game. It is a habitual part of how they play golf. But, does it have to be?

The next time you out on the course and encounter one of these flares as a result of an undesirable shot or swing, take note. What does it feel like?

Think back to a situation where youve been the maddest and most upset in your life. Rate that a 10.

Now think back to a time when you were the most relaxed, perhaps on a beach or in the mountains without a care in the world. Rate that a 1.

Now, while on the course and facing one of these flares (or loss of control), rate it according to the scale above.

This simple technique will allow you acknowledge where your focus is, to feel it, and to move on. In other words, youll be able to return to the task at hand: playing golf.

If youre looking to improve your golf swing, give this a try. Its a great way of letting go of the bouts of temper (because they are seen and acknowledged) and returning your concentration to your immediate next swing.

Golf Swing Tip – Hogan’s Pane of Glass



Hogan’s Pane of Glass explained in detail.

The best mental image ever devised to keep your golf swing on plane is “Ben Hogan’s Pane of Glass”. Hogan spends a whole chapter in his book “Five Lessons” on the swing plane using this “pane of glass” imagery. This tells you how important he felt swinging the club on plane is to becoming a great golfer.

Look at the drawing above and burn it into your psyche! This large pane of glass is angled from the ball all the way through the golfer’s shoulders and beyond. The angle of the pane is dictated by the golfer’s stance. Imagine a hole in the center of this large pane of glass just big enough for the golfer’s head to poke through.

Hogan liked to imagine this pane of glass when he swung because it allowed him to swing the club under this imaginary “pane of glass” in the back swing as well as down into impact and into his finish – without breaking the glass!

The truth is Hogan’s golf swing was always on plane and he is considered by most to be “the best ball striker who ever lived”!

This image alone has helped me tremendously in learning how to attack the ball from the all powerful inside. When you learn how to swing down from the inside, you develop that all important “lag” in your golf swing – and lag is the secret to effortless power in your golf swing!

If you have an “over the top” swing (aka casting), you can see how you would break this pane of glass at the start of your down swing. By being aware of the pane of glass your hands will drop down to your side during the down swing, maintaining your lag (aka the slot – illustrated beautifully by Hogan in the photo on the right).

You will be attacking the inside quadrant of the golf ball – a very powerful image to have for your golf swing.

The “pane of glass” image also helps your backswing. If you swing the club too much to the outside during the initial part of your back swing, you will break the pane of glass. By keeping Hogan’s image in your mind as you start your backswing your arms will stay connected to your body – you are almost forced to swing the club on plane! The wrists will cock by themselves without you giving them any thought.

The other nice thing about using the Hogan “pane of glass” image is it will help with your alignment. As you settle into your stance, imagine Hogan’s pane of glass being perpendicular to your target line. This will help you align your feet, your hips, and your shoulders to the target line – all crucial components for proper alignment.

Hogan’s pane of glass image also keeps you centered and stacked during the golf swing because your head movement will be minimal – remember your head is poking through the hole in the glass.

So work Hogan’s “pane of glass” image into your regular golf routine and learn to become a great striker of the golf ball – just like Ben Hogan!

Golf Instruction Tips – How to Play From Uneven Lies



During the course of a round of golf it is more than likely that you will face at least one situation where the ball is not on flat ground in relation to where you need to stand, an uneven lie. This golf instruction tip will focus on what we need to do to still make good contact under those conditions.

There are four different situations that constitute an uneven lie, they are :

#1. Uphill lie

#2. Downhill lie



#3.
Ball above the feet

#4. Ball below the feet

Sometimes there is confusion between #1.and #3. And #2.and #4. Please be aware these are different situations and need to be addressed separately.

Golf Instruction Tips

#1. The tendency from this lie is to hit the fat shot, so firstly take a less lofted club, the ball will fly higher and shorter from here. Second move the ball slightly forward in the stance. Thirdly make sure your shoulders are parallel to the lie of the ground.

#2. Usually a top or thin shot from here. Pretty much the opposite to #1. For the cure. The ball will fly low from here so take more loft. Second make sure the shoulders are parallel to the ground (front shoulder lower). Move the ball slightly back.

#3. Again a fat shot when you get it wrong. Make sure you stand taller than you would normally in your set-up. Do not bend your knees. This is probably the most important point. The club with want to swing more around you with this shot, don’t fight that, just let it. Also be aware the ball will fly left so be sure to aim a little to the right.

#4. Can result in a top, a whiff or the dreaded shank. Getting the address right is really important here. Make sure you bend your knees and keep them that way, bend more than usual from the waist. I won’t say you can’t overdo this but it’s close. The club will want to swing much more up and down or vertical with this shot, again don’t fight this, let it happen. Again be aware the ball will fly to the right, so aim left.
